(Im)possible Alliance
The essay focuses on the changing relationship between the Palestinian-Arab minority and the Zionist left, whose governments – until Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination – had enjoyed the unqualified support of the Arab electorate. How did the events of October 2000 reverse the trend of inclusion towards excluding the minority? And how did this disillusionment influence the shift in public opinion from seeking a solution to accepting the lack of one regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? Finally, the author provides suggestions on how to create an effective alliance that promotes Jewish-Arab partnership and strengthens Israel’s democracy.
